GIS Use on
Wins National Award

DENVER, Colo.—The Governor’s Office of Information Technology (OIT) is pleased to announce its team has won a national award for “Best Use of GIS” for its work on the state flood recovery website, The award comes from Consumerization of IT in the Enterprise (CITE) Awards, which focuses on giving national recognition to organizations leading technology and business innovation.

The use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) on was transformational for those seeking the latest flood information when the disaster hit Colorado last September. Google Operations Director Brandon Williams says the immediacy of information is what made GIS such an important tool during the floods. “We worked with Google to ensure official information was included in public alerts, adjusting the search engine results to prioritize emergency information,” said Williams. “We also worked with local, state and federal GIS providers to make sure all information was consolidated into one official source.”

This marks the first time the State of Colorado created a coordination group that included local, state and federal GIS. The Google tools that Colorado implemented during the flood disaster can now be used when other crises arise, because the state will be able to make recovery information more accessible, more quickly for those who need it.

Awards will be presented at the CITE conference + expo in San Francisco in April 2014.
